Are the israelites dark skinned or ruddy?

I always thought they were just red-haired. I assume since they lived in the Middle East, their skin would be darker than someone in the North. All that being said, it makes no difference to God. We are all one in Christ Jesus, red, white, yellow, pink, male, female...etc...
